EU Case Study: GYLON® Style 3504 – Microwave hybrid processing technology

INDUSTRY

Medical technology - OEM

CUSTOMER

Customer is an Italian company specialized in advanced microwave instrumentation for analytical and organic chemistry labs.

BACKGROUND

Customer’s technical development is the first all-in-one tissue processor with an exclusive patented microwave hybrid processing technology.

Normally, temperature is raised with electrical resistence, but the customer uses micro-waves getting a more precise temperature curve and a fastest process (biopsy). Analysis time is dropped from 10 to 2 hours.

The customer had persistent problems with leakage issues in his applications.

CHALLENGES FACED

As well as ensuring that the sealing solution should solve the leakage problem, it was also required, that the sealing material should be transparent to microwaves, chemical resistant to process acids and enough elastic to keep the sealing.

OPERATING CONDITIONS

1. Media: Kerosene, xylene, 4% formalin, ethanol, isopropanol, isoparaffin at ambient pressure. Vapors of isopropanol and xylene at 600 mBar absolute and kerosene at 150 mBar absolute.

2. Temperature: Max 70°C

3. Pressure: From 60 mBar to 1 bar absolute

4. Size: Special form: 58,0 x 101,5 x 4,8 mm; acc. to customer drawing

SOLUTION AND BENEFIT

Garlock and customer’s specialists discussed issues and solutions. Finally, the perfect solution was identified: GYLON® Style 3504.

GYLON® Style 3504 in a special size and form, according to customer’s drawing perfectly sealed the machines. They replaced all previous seals because GYLON® fulfilled all their requirements. GYLON® Style 3504 is transparent to microwaves, chemical resistant to process acids and enough elastic to keep the sealing.
